May2007 | Rode the bike out to see the bridge. On the way out front street I spotted a rusting bridge span at Port of Portland Terminal on the Willamette. Surprised to learn of a bridge of that type there, i went for a closer look behind the Portland Fire Station. Turns out the bridge is indeed destined to be the new Sauvie Island span, being built at the Port of Portland Terminal 2. Out at the old bridge, I was able to take a set of pics, and to ride across the old bridge. The sidewalk is closed so have to ride on the roadway, which is ok too. The new bridge is just right next to the old span. The parking area at the foot of the bridge that was a public lot for bikers and others has been taken over by the construction crew. |
